A good birthday party comes down to three things. Something the birthday person actually wants to do. A plan their friends can comfortably join. And an amount of organizing that doesn't eat the host's entire month. New York is a great place to pull that off because you get to build the plan around the city itself: cooking together in Chelsea, following a ghost story through Greenwich Village, or watching Manhattan light up from the water. I want to be upfront about something. I run The Radical Agreement Project, and our improv birthday workshop is one of the ten options below. I'd rather tell you that now than let you figure it out three sections in. I've also included nine other experiences, with different budgets, group sizes, and levels of participation in mind. Dinner and drinks might be exactly right. So might a pottery class, a climbing session, or an afternoon spent being ridiculous with your friends. My advice is to pick one main event, leave room to hang out, and keep the travel manageable. Asking twelve people to cross three boroughs between activities is how a birthday acquires a project manager.

Best for: Friends who want to laugh and play together, including people who have never tried improv.

Our private improv birthday workshops get your group playing simple comedy games together, with an instructor guiding the action. Nobody needs acting experience, prepared jokes, or a secret ambition to join Saturday Night Live. There are no mistakes in improv (it's kind of our whole thing), so there's no wrong way to play. And guests who would rather watch can sit out.

The sweet spot is 6 to 16 people and about 90 minutes of games. In NYC, an instructor can come to your home or a suitable private party space, or we can arrange a rehearsal studio. Published pricing is $250 minimum or $30 per participant, whichever is higher, and studio rental typically adds $100 to $150. Food and drinks are arranged separately, subject to the venue's rules.
