Improv@Work

I'll never forget a workshop I ran for a small San Francisco based sales team. The focus was listening (a very common focus for an improv-based workshop for professionals). Early in the workshop I led the group in playing the classic improv game, One Word Story.
To run One Word Story I broke participants down into smaller groups. Each group stood in a circle creating a story one word at a time. Each participant took a turn choosing the next word in a growing narrative as the responsibility was passed counter clockwise around the circle.
The below isn't a perfect recreation of the actual way one of the groups played One Word Story, but it ran something like the below working off of the suggestion """"squirrel"""":
One * day * a * squirrel * thought * I * am * hungry * <PERIOD> * So * the * squirrel.* ate * a * dog * that * lived * nearby * <PERIOD> * A * whole * dog * <EXCLAMTION POINT> * The * nearby * neighbors * were * freaked * big * time * <PERIOD> * They * formed * a * mob * with * torches * and * pitchforks * <PERIOD> * But * the * squirrel * just * ate * them * all * <PERIOD> * <END>
We all laughed so hard at the end of that story and it is because better stories are easier to create when listening carefully for the direction your partners are signaling for you to move in. Listening is easier than inventing or controlling! To have your message make sense you need to stay in the moment and address your listener where they are, instead of where you planned for them to be.
Think of the application in sales. Clients often tell sales people how to close them, tough not directly. The instructions come in the form of objections and problems, but those objections always point to the path tat will lead to a Yes. Sales professionals should be aware of these signs as they emerge in the sales process and consider whether following their client's instructions might lead to an easier sale than educating or convincing their client.
