Orlando is a city full of energy. Between the theme parks and the tech startups rolling through town, it’s no surprise that businesses here are always looking for new ways to connect and grow. One of my favorite memories from Orlando involves working with a medium-sized marketing agency that wanted to do just that. Connect and grow.
Their team had expanded rapidly over the past year, and while everyone liked each other well enough, there was this invisible wall between the newer hires and the longer-standing employees. The manager explained it this way: “It’s like we’re two separate teams working under the same roof.” They wanted a way to break down those walls and start feeling like one cohesive unit again. Hence, this was to becomeone of my favorite experiences of team building in Orlando.
We met in a bright, open office downtown. After a quick introduction, I got them started on one of my go-to exercises: Expert Panel. It’s a game where three volunteers pretend to be experts on a completely ridiculous topic, something like “how to train a pet dolphin” or “the history of flying pizza delivery drones.” The rest of the group gets to ask questions, and the “experts” have to answer, one at a time, without breaking a laugh, of course. (Don’t worry, they always laugh)
As soon as we started, the room suddenly felt lighter. By the end of the first round, people who had barely spoken to each other before were finishing each other’s sentences. By the third round, the quietest people in the office were stepping up, with others cheering for them.
We followed that with a trust-building activity where the entire group worked together to solve a work problem without speaking, kind of like office charades. Watching them act for each other was funny and amazing. It’s like you could see those walls disappearing in real time.
Afterward, we circled up to talk about the experience. Someone said, “I didn’t realize how much isolated I was while working. I’ve been missing out on getting to know everyone else.” Another added, “This made me see how much better we are when we’re actually working together.”
And then, they weren’t just another corporate team. They were THE team.
