Improv@Work
One time at an Oklahoma City improv class I was leading, I ran a variation of One Word Story that used drawing instead of words to focus on collaboration. Most experienced professionals have encountered One Word Story at this point, so variations like the one below can prove effective at creating excitement and buy in and works particularly well in large group improv team building classes or lectures.
The exercise is named simply Face Drawing. Here is how it works.
Divide all the participants up into pairs. Each pair is given one pen and a piece of paper. The two people alternate taking turns drawing as follows. First person starts making a mark, once they have to lift their pen to continue, they pass the pen to their partner. The partner does the same.
They go back and forth, until one person decides that the face is complete, which they indicate by writing a letter and passing their pen to their partner who writes another letter. This is how the name of the character is created.
One of the partners will eventually have control and decide they are content with the name, at which point they put the pen down and part one is completed.
NOTE: During the drawing portion, the partners may not talk to each other. They have to react to what the other person is doing without planning or coaching.
The second part is that the partners will then tell a story to other folks about their character, by alternating one sentence at a time, so that neither partner has too much control or sole responsibility for the story that they co-create.
This game demands that we validate and agree with our partner's ideas, while still adding our own unique contributions. Participants will also experience talking in short turns, useful for effective communication. You talk, I talk, you talk, I talk.
In addition, partners get to experience unexpected (and effective) non-verbal communication, and see that they are capable of greater creativity than they thought (many adults when asked will insist that they cannot draw, but all of them can).
