Improv@Work

I pride my company on working hard to make sure the instructors at our corporate events are of a caliber my clients expect. For more expensive L&D focused workshops I maintain of standard of all instructors having at least a decade of experience running improv based workshops for companies. For less expensive events I offer (essentially) a happy hour meets Whose Line Is It Anyway type of experience. Here the instructors may only have a few years of experience.
I recently explained this to a client before sending a proposal, and I also made sure to highlight that I always include sample instructor bios in my proposal. That doesn't you can order a specific instructor, it is just to give clients a sense of what they can expect at a certain level of investment. Most of my instructors work in the entertainment, and so their hours are irregular. There is no way to know if they are available until I offer them the opportunity.
Even though this is clear in my proposal, my client misheard me and selected an instructor from the potential list. Of course, because nothing is easy, that particular instructor was already booked to be filming on the day in question,. I relayed the information and suggested an instructor I knew would be available.
But him? My client didn't like him. She wondered if I could send a few options for her and her team to review.
This was a problem. How could I know an instructor was available without telling them about the gig and how would they feel when I didn't eventually offer them the opportunity? Rejected, that's how.
We agreed I would send a list of four additional potential instructors to my client and her and her team could select who they liked best. I would then offer them the job and if they couldn't do itI would offer it to their second favorite and so on.
Well after reviewing the options my client decided their favorite option was the instructor I suggested originally, because he had the most experience. Ha! They made a good choice and their workshop went great.

Sample Improv Exercise
Passion Circle (Good for creativity)
Have the group stand in a circle. Each participant will choose a subject they are passionate about. The instructor will ask them to speak about these subjects in a random order by pointing at them, with each participant having several opportunities to speak on their subject. They should select topics they have honest points of view about (“I hate the Knicks!”, Cooking is a waste of time!” or “Skateboarding is a great sport!” are good examples) not funny stories from their past. For this particular workshop, try asking people to speak on honest opinions they hold regarding office events.
Discuss: Invariably the participants who speak honestly about their passions will say several hilarious things without trying to be funny. That’s because your best creative ideas always come from you and your life experience. Asking yourself to think of an idea more creative than what you typically have will result in a type of writer’s block. In improv we have a saying, Remember, Don’t Invent. When being creative it is better to rely on your own life experience than to try to think differently than you typically do when generating ideas.
