If you need a great listening exercise tat won't put people to sleep, I have it for you. I remember running it with a small team of consultants in Memphis. It is called Red Ball and here is how it works:

Standing in a circle, announce that you are holding a red ball. Establish it can never change size or color. Say you can pass it to someone else by calling out “Red Ball” while miming the action of tossing it to them.

That person must then mime catching the ball. Once they have it they then have it to pass to someone else in the same fashion. After this is going for a bit, add a blue ball, a green ball, a yellow ball, as many balls as you think they can handle.

See how many balls you can get going at once. When the exercise is over see if all of the balls remain.

I said add as many balls as you think they can handle because success in an improv exercise like this counts for a lot and I wouldn't to push a group past their ability level in a workshop. But if they are doing really great and you think they can handle it, crumple up a piece of paper and have them toss that actual ball to each other without saying anything, communicating your intention to throw it solely through eye contact.

This is a listening exercise but also a stay in the moment exercise. It requires that you stay in the moment and know how you are doing and others are dong at the same time. If you throw a ball and it isn't caught that means you misjudged whether your teammate was ready for your throw or even knew it was coming. If a ball is thrown to you and you missed it, it means you weren't paying enough attention to what was happening around you and didn't realize someone was counting on you.
