A Client Story

Recently a medical device company in San Francisco reached out to me about a quick team building event for a September quarterly meeting. People from multiple locations around the globe are coming to their site to participate in a week of corporate activities centered around the theme of innovation. One planned activity is to have people pitch, invention ideas. The goal isn’t to come up with a great new invention, but just to get people in the mode of sharing ideas that they might otherwise self filter. Could improv prepare people to share ideas? Of course. Improvisers know that everyone can contribute almost constantly; that is everyone is equally creative from the perspective that everyone maintains a stream of consciousness. But some people feel more comfortable sharing their ideas out loud than others. And those are the people we typically think of as creative. In improv we want everyone onstage (in a group, on a team or class, etc..) to participate equally. It means trusting that your own ideas are valuable and supporting each other’s ideas with unmitigated enthusiasm. That last part is so important and improv really traces us that lesson: If you don’t support your team members’ ideas they will notice and eventually stop offering ideas. We fool ourselves into thinking the key to unlocking another’s creativity is in them when actually we can unlock their creativity by offering them support. There is, of course, well over a metric ton of fun improv exercises that address unlocking each other’s creativity through support, but our conversation found its way over to the classic corporate stalwart, Yes And Conversations. We talked it through and decided to build a workshop for September with that exercise serving as the centerpiece. I’ll update with photos and details after the workshop!
