Frank Villalvazo
Co-President of Islander Improv
Frank is an incoming junior at TAMUCC, his first experience with improv was in middle school with his district wide "improv Olympics." Since then, he has taken Improv class with Professor Meredith Melville, and is now looking forward to his first year on his school's scholarship-based improv team: The Breakers.
1. When I was getting ready to audition for the breakers (my college improv team), me and
all of my roommates started playing improv games to practice out of our apartment. We
were getting so nervous for those auditions that out of nowhere, we would be watching a
movie, and then we would stop and start playing random line games to prepare. It was
so fun and genuinely made the process more enjoyable. It was also really nice that we
had some people that were already on the team there, they would help give us pointers.
It was fun because we were learning more about how to be good at improv without it
ever feeling like a chore, it was just a good time.
2. My freshman year of college, I took an improv class with Meredith Melville. She is our
improv team coach, and basically THE person to go to if you have questions about
improv. She was so much fun to work with, and taught us a bunch of short form games,
and how to create our own long forms. The class was full of theatre majors and
non-theatre majors who all felt comfortable being able to perform in front of each other,
that is the vibe improv brings, everyone knows you don’t have a script, so nobody
expects shakespeare when you go up there. It was always a really nice environment and
Meredith was always the loudest laugh in the audience when a group would be
performing.
